Yandy Diaz
Yandy Diaz Not in Friday's lineup
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 5:02 PM
Diaz (hamstring) is not in the Rays' starting lineup against the Cardinals on Friday.
Analysis: Diaz was diagnosed with a low-grade hamstring injury that he suffered against St. Louis on Thursday. He'll be out of the lineup Friday but could be available for Sunday's series finale. Brandon Lowe will serve as the Rays' designated hitter Friday while Tristan Gray draws the start at second base and bats ninth.
Joe Boyle
Joe Boyle Demotion to minors now official
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 3:30 PM
The Rays optioned Boyle to Triple-A Durham on Friday.
Analysis: Boyle had yielded 16 runs (15 earned) over his last three starts and did not last longer than four innings in any of those outings. He will look to sharpen things up back at Durham and hope to get another opportunity with the Rays later this season.
Joe Boyle
Joe Boyle Will be optioned back to minors
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 2:56 PM
Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said Friday that Boyle will be optioned to Triple-A Durham, Tom Krasniqi of 95.3 WDAE reports.
Analysis: Boyle surrendered six runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks over four innings in Thursday's loss to the Cardinals and has been tagged for 16 runs (15 earned) over his last three starts. The right-hander has dominated at Durham this season (1.73 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 96:31 K:BB in 73 innings) and shown flashes at the major-league level, but Boyle is still looking for more consistency.
Joe Boyle
Joe Boyle Handed third loss
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 11:26 PM
Boyle (1-3) allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings to take the loss versus the Cardinals on Thursday.
Analysis: The one bright spot was that he kept the ball in the yard for just the second time in his last six outings. Boyle has allowed at least six runs three times in that span, and he's also issued three or more walks in three of those starts. For the season, the 26-year-old is at a disappointing 5.40 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 39:21 K:BB through 36.2 innings over 10 appearances (six starts). Boyle is tentatively projected to make his next start at Cleveland.
Yandy Diaz
Yandy Diaz Avoids serious injury
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 10:08 PM
Diaz has a low-grade hamstring injury, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Diaz suffered the injury while running the bases in the fifth inning of Thursday's game against the Cardinals. He may be forced to miss Saturday's game -- the Rays are off Friday -- but it doesn't sound as if Diaz has suffered a significant injury.
Yandy Diaz
Yandy Diaz Diagnosed with hamstring soreness
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 9:14 PM
Diaz exited Thursday's game against the Cardinals due to right hamstring soreness, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.
Analysis: Diaz appeared to suffer the injury in the fifth inning but remained in the game for two additional frames. The severity of the issue isn't currently known, but more details should emerge Friday after potential imaging.
Yandy Diaz
Yandy Diaz Exits with foot injury
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 9:00 PM
Diaz exited Thursday's game against the Cardinals due to a foot/ankle injury, Brian Murphy of MLB.comreports.
Analysis: Diaz appeared to initially suffer the injury while running the bases in the fifth inning. He remained in the game but was ultimately removed for a pinch hitter in the seventh frame. Diaz will likely undergo imaging, which should provide more detail about a potential return.
Stuart Fairchild
Stuart Fairchild Moved to 60-day IL
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 5:36 PM
The Rays transferred Fairchild (oblique) to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.
Analysis: Fairchild has not resumed baseball activities since landing on the injured list July 23 according to the Rays. Now on the 60-day injured list, he won't be able to return until the last week of the regular season. If the Rays are out of the playoff race, the 29-year-old's season is likely over. In corresponding moves Thursday, the Rays called-up Carson Williams and placed Ha-Seong Kim (back) on the 10-day injured list.
Ha-Seong Kim
Ha-Seong Kim Heading back to injured list
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 12:47 PM
The Rays will place Kim (back) on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Kim was scratched from Wednesday's lineup with back tightness and evidently the injury is bad enough to require another trip to the IL for the veteran infielder. The 29-year-old Kim has been limited to only 29 games this season due to myriad injuries, and he's slashed just .214/.290/.321 in those contests. It's not clear how long Kim will be sidelined this time around. Top prospect Carson Williams will take Kim's spot on the active roster.
Chandler Simpson
Chandler Simpson Swipes two bags
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 9:13 AM
Simpson went 1-for-5 with two stolen bases Wednesday against the Yankees.
Analysis: Simpson made his impact late in the game, reaching base on a leadoff single in the seventh inning before swiping both second and third base. He went 10 games without a stolen base from late July to early August, Simpson has three stolen bases on four attempts across his last eight games. He's also hit .375 with five runs and three RBI in those eight contests.
Pete Fairbanks
Pete Fairbanks Hit hard in 10th inning
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 9:02 AM
Fairbanks (4-4) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits while striking out one across one inning to take the loss Wednesday against the Yankees.
Analysis: Fairbanks entered the game in the 10th inning with the score knotted at 3-3. He allowed homers to the first two batters he faced, the first pair he's surrendered in his last six appearances. While his strikeouts remain down, Fairbanks has still been very effective this season by maintaining a 2.85 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 47.1 frames.
Drew Rasmussen
Drew Rasmussen Solid start against Yankees
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 8:58 AM
Rasmussen allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six across six innings Wednesday against the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision.
Analysis: Rasmussen allowed a pair of solo home runs but otherwise held the Yankees in check. After having his workload limited during a brief stretch in July, Rasmussen has now turned in three consecutive quality starts. He's allowed only four runs (three earned) across 18 innings in that span, maintaining an excellent 15:2 K:BB.
Ha-Seong Kim
Ha-Seong Kim Dealing with back tightness
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 6:24 PM
Kim was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Yankees due to low back tightness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Kim spent time on the injured list with a lower back strain at the end of July before he was activated Aug. 1. It's been a season full of injuries for the 29-year-old shortstop, as he's also dealt with calf, shoulder and hamstring issues, limiting Kim to just 23 games to this point. It's unclear if Kim will need another IL stint. Tristan Gray is at shortstop for Tampa Bay on Wednesday.
Ha-Seong Kim
Ha-Seong Kim Scratched from Wednesday's lineup
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 5:39 PM
Kim was scratched from the Rays' lineup against the Yankees on Wednesday due to an undisclosed reason.
Analysis: Expect the team to provide an explanation for Kim's late removal from the lineup following Wednesday's contest. As a result of Kim being scratched, Tristan Gray will start at shortstop and bat ninth. Kim has logged at least one hit in four of his last five games, going 6-for-20 with a double and two steals over that span.
Everson Pereira
Everson Pereira Sitting after three straight starts
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 3:52 PM
Pereira is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees.
Analysis: After going 1-for-9 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored while starting each of the last three games in center field, Pereira will be the odd man out of the Tampa Bay outfield while Josh Lowe (oblique) makes his return to action. While he likely won't be in line for regular playing time against righties with Lowe back in the fold, Pereira could spell Lowe, Jake Mangum or Chandler Simpson in the outfield when the Rays oppose lefties.
Josh Lowe
Josh Lowe Back in lineup
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 3:42 PM
Lowe (oblique) will start in right field and bat fifth in Wednesday's game versus the Yankees.
Analysis: Lowe has been held out of the previous three contests due to right oblique tightness, but he's feeling much better and will give it a go in Wednesday's series finale. The outfielder will enter play Wednesday slashing just .174/.220/.261so far in August.
Hunter Bigge
Hunter Bigge Starting to play catch
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 9:42 AM
The Rays announced Tuesday that Bigge (lat/face) has resumed playing catch, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Initially placed on the injured list May 6 due to a right lat strain, Bigge's recovery program from that injury was stalled when he was hit in the face by a foul ball while he was in the dugout during a June 19 game against the Orioles. He sustained multiple facial fractures and required surgery, but he feels fully healed from that injury and has now turned his focus back to rehabbing his strained lat. As a reliever, Bigge won't require the extended build-up that a starter would coming off a lat injury, but since he hasn't yet resumed mound work, he's likely at least a couple weeks away from returning from the 60-day injured list.
Alex Faedo
Alex Faedo Done for season
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 9:33 AM
The Rays announced Tuesday that Faedo (shoulder) underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery Aug. 6 and will miss the remainder of the season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Acquired from the Tigers in February, Faedo will conclude the season without having made an appearance at the big-league level for Tampa Bay. He's been on the shelf throughout 2025 after experiencing shoulder discomfort in spring training and then hitting multiple snags in his recovery in the ensuing months. Faedo had made enough progress to begin a minor-league rehab assignment June 27, but he appeared in just six contests before being shut down again shortly after the All-Star break and getting diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. Given that pitchers often struggle to bounce back from the procedure, Faedo profiles as a likely non-tender candidate this winter. Even if he keeps his spot on the 40-man roster or re-signs with Tampa Bay on a minor-league deal, Faedo's availability for the start of the 2026 season could be affected.
Stuart Fairchild
Stuart Fairchild Yet to resume activities
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 9:27 AM
The Rays announced Tuesday that Fairchild (oblique) has yet to resume baseball activities since being placed on the 10-day injured list July 23, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Fairchild's lack of notable progress nearly a month into his recovery from a left oblique strain suggests that he's unlikely to make his return from the IL before the end of August. The Rays could have a crowded outfield by the time Fairchild moves past the oblique injury, so it wouldn't be surprising if he were designated for assignment once he gets activated.
Jonny DeLuca
Jonny DeLuca Resumes running
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 9:23 AM
The Rays announced Tuesday that DeLuca (hamstring) has resumed a running progression, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: DeLuca is in the midst of his second stint on the injured list of the season after he suffered a left hamstring strain Aug. 6. The Rays fully anticipate that DeLuca will return by the end of the season, and the fact that he's already running again backs up that sentiment. He may be limited to a short-side platoon role in the outfield once he's activated.
